Google has launched an anti-harassment tool called Harassment Manager, that will help users document, hide, and block malicious comments on social media. The announcement was made on the International Women’s Day.

The new tool is oriented to reduce online harassment, specially toward female journalists, activists, and public figures who face gender-based abuse. After research done with women victims of online harassment, Google decided to develop an application that will allow to document the instances of harassment and take actions against it.

Google made the anti-harassment tool as an open-source project, and it is now available for use by journalists on the Thomson Reuter Foundation. Users will be able to compile harassment reports, hide comments and block offenders.

The anti-harassment tool is only one of many efforts being done to protect social media users against online violence. Google said that the plan is to work with more organizations to improve the tool and deploy features that meet the needs of specific communities.

Lucy Vasserman, engineering manager of Harassment Manager said: “This is the first step and we’re hoping to see a ripple effect. We do want it to make immediate impact on the folks who are experiencing severe harassment. It’s not a magic wand that removes the problem entirely, which is impossible right now.”
